Thought for the Day – Monday 5 June, 2017

Today I have to admit that my thought for yesterday makes me guilty of the very thing I was thinking at the time. You see, I didn’t publish my thought for Monday on Monday, Just as I only published my thought for Friday last, on Saturday. This is really not good enough. If I say it will be done on a particular day then you will expect it on that day. Not the day after. So, I didn’t live up to your expectation and that is unacceptable. I can only promise that I will strive never to miss my deadline again.

So what is this thought that makes me say the things that I’ve just said?

It is simply this:

“If you snooze, you lose!”

You’ve all heard this thought before, it’s not new. But today, I am living proof that people forget it, and what it means, all the time. So what did I lose by publishing my thoughts a day late? Well, for me the answer to that is simple. By not meeting your expectation, I lost an opportunity to win your trust. That means I will have to work doubly hard to get it back again to the level I need to have you believe that I will deliver on my promises in the future. Maybe that seems hard, when we are talking about a single thought. But what about when I promise to deliver a new book at a certain time? Or tell you that it is worth giving my books a chance and reading them. Or if I ask you to write a review because it is critical to my success as a writer? Why should you believe me, if I don’t live up to my promises? Why should I expect you to?

And this thought applies to many things in life. Many opportunities are available during a lifetime and most of them are lost. Why? Because we talked ourselves out of them, or we said, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Or we were scared to take the chance. It might have been that we were simply too lazy. Here’s an example. During my first job I had a chance to join a startup company with the guy I was working with at the time. We were approached by some suppliers who had an idea. Both of us turned the idea down and the people who approached us went ahead without us. Within a year, they were millionaires and we were in the same jobs. I have never had such an opportunity again. I ‘snoozed’ and I lost. BIG TIME!

When opportunity knocks at your door, it is often riskier to ignore it than accept it. Be brave. Follow your dreams. Don’t put things off. Take the chances that are offered.

So, today I will publish my thought for yesterday, with my sincere apologies for being late. And I will also deliver my thought for today. ON TIME.

Thanks for reading.
